You may be aware BS 5839-1:2013 came into effect on the 31 March 2013. This new revision consists of a number of technical changes but is not a full revision of the document which will happen in due course. Detailed below is one of the major changes to the standard.
Residential Care Premises (Care Homes)
New recommendations have been included for Residential Care Premises. Clause 15.2f now recommends in residential care premises, facilities should be provided for automatic transmission of alarm signals to an alarm receiving centre. The need to provide clear information on the location of any fire has been highlighted, Clause 4.2c recommends, where occupants of a building are going to need assistance from staff to evacuate the building (e.g. in residential care premises and hospitals), the fire detection and fire alarm system should be addressable if the building has facilities for more than ten people to sleep.
Clause 19.2.2b also recommends for staff alarms there should no delay in summoning the fire and rescue service.
